The most recent thing I learned is that our brain hates frequent checking of emails. This frequent context switching never comes naturally to our human brain.
In his book A World without Email, Cal Newport highlights the fact that our brain operates best in a sequential manner. But due to the digital revolution in an age of email and social media, wherein we frequently check emails and messages, our productivity goes down.
This frequent context switch is something our sequential brain finds very difficult to adjust.
Hence for Deep Work it is recommended to focus on the job at hand avoiding frequent context switching.
Our human brain is essentially sequential and hates context switching. Wherever we operate in a world where multi tasking is the norm. To understand the incompatibility of the sequential brain in the parallel world please read this blog post.
In his book A World Without Email, highlights this gap and puts forward the opinion that to make the best use of our sequential brain, we need to do work with more focus.

I do need a break and STOP CHECKING my INBOX frequently. Email though an amazingly convenient medium of communication, frequent checking of emails can lead to toxic side effects.
In his book A WORLD WITHOUT EMAIL, Cal Newport has enlightened us on the harmful effects of checking frequent emails and its impact to deep work.
“While the ability to rapidly communicate using digital messages is useful, the frequent disruptions created by this behavior also make it hard to focus, which has a bigger impact on our ability to produce valuable output than we may have realized.”
