    How is Leadership like Parenting?

    The last thing on great leadership I have learnt is that leadership is like parenting. Let’s explore more.

    Simon Sinek has done extensive work on this topic via his experience with US Navy Seals, great leaders and has come up with this wonderful metaphor.

    Leadership is like Parenting

    Great leaders back their team and encourage them to do their best. This is very similar to how we as parents support our kids to give off their best.

    The last thing I learnt is that GIVING results in fulfillment when it is done judiciously. Read this insight to know the relationship between Voluntary Giving and Fulfillment.

    The rule of voluntary giving stipulates 100 hours in a year as the magic number. Though this comes to around 2 hours per week this never crosses our mind.

    The most recent thing I learned is that our brain hates frequent checking of emails. This frequent context switching never comes naturally to our human brain.

    In his book A World without Email, Cal Newport highlights the fact that our brain operates best in a sequential manner. But due to the digital revolution in an age of email and social media, wherein we frequently check emails and messages, our productivity goes down.

    This frequent context switch is something our sequential brain finds very difficult to adjust.

    Hence for Deep Work it is recommended to focus on the job at hand avoiding frequent context switching.
