Come let us pile on motivation..
The following video illuminates us on the need of putting TRUST over PERFORMANCE , the NAVY SEAL way, as mentioned by Simon Sinek..

For Navy Seals the real test of a leader is on the basis of Trust.Performance is important but Trust which relates to Character is the primary selection criteria
Performance relates to technical competence and can be taught by training whereas Trust is character oriented and hence ones falling in High Trust High Performance , High Trust Medium Performance or even Low Performance are preferred
Adopted from Simon Sinek’s book The Infinite Game
With respect to performance and Trust , Trust is of much higher importance to Navy Seals and their training is oriented to encourage Trustworthy leaders rather than selfish minded high performing individuals.
Performance is related to technical competence and is more related to Intelligence Quotient which can be trained. On the other hand Trust relates to Character and more so related to Emotional Quotient which is needed to help collaborate with each other.
The same principles hold good in a highly trustworthy work environment where infinite minded visionary leaders focus on the macro aspects rather than micro aspects.Focus on macro aspects needs encouragement of Trustworthy individuals over High performing selfish minded individuals.
Concepts adopted from Simon Sinek’s book The Infinite Game
Whereas Performance relates to technical competence , Trust relates to character.
In summary Performance is related to IQ whereas Trust relates to the ability to collaborate with everyone , being likable and relates to EQ.
Hence NAVY SEALS prefer leaders who have high EQ over those with high IQ.
Adopted from Simon Sinek’s book The Infinite Game.
The highly skilled NAVY SEALS are interested in whether or not leaders can cross a water hazard or any other arbitrary obstacle.
They are interested in training leaders who can create an environment in which everyone feels trusted and trusting so that they can work together to overcome any obstacle.
Performance is technical competence whereas trust is related to character and hence NAVY SEALS end up giving more emphasis to Trust or EQ than IQ or performance.
Adopted from Simon Sinek’s book titled The Infinite Game.
Taking the example of Navy Seals , more than performance the need is of a trustworthy individual.
A high performing individual low on trust spoils the environment and the team morale.
Whereas a highly trustworthy individual even though lacking in performance is much more in demand since IQ related to performance can be taught
EQ cannot be taught and is the most important prerequisite that a leader seeks in an individual to keep playing the infinite game
The ideal scenario is to have the balance between IQ and EQ
Adopted from Simon Sinek’s book The Infinite Game
Performance at work is more related to technical competence.Whereas trust is more related to the character of a person.
With NAVY SEALs it has often been found that a person high on performance low on trust is regarded as “toxic” & hence often ostracized. This is simply because of the fact that such a person is more prone to 1) Blame others 2) Talk non-sense about others 3) can have a negative influence on other team members 4) exhibits narcissism
Thus in situations where collaboration is of prime importance , trust is the most important need , even a low performance can be tolerated.
Simon Sinek brings out this point in his book titled “The Infinite Game”.
The Basic Underwater Demolition for Seals(BUD/S) is a rigorous training program for the iconic NAVY SEALS.
This is a test of grit , character and determination.Lots of participants eventually drop out and in the end it is the most determined and gritty who emerge triumphant.
To win the program you are not expected to be macho , well built but collaborative and gutsy to be able to help the one on your left abd your right. The ones who are selfish are ultimately ostracized and drop out.
Since this is a program to filter out the very best , hence the program is designed to very rigorous.
This is again like a game wherein completion of each stage eventually brings a participant closer to the bigger picture.
Thus what matters at the end of it is grit and endurance.
