  • Why WINNING in LIFE no longer matters?

Why WINNING in LIFE no longer matters?

    Daily writing prompt
Are there any activities or hobbies you’ve outgrown or lost interest in over time?

Earlier any event I used to participate my goal was to win. Winning in every aspect of life, mattered a lot to me. Over time, I have realized that Winning no longer matters in the infinite game of life.

As Simon Sinek said in his pathbreaking book, The Infinite Game, life as well as business is an Infinite game.

In such a game, players come and go, the game just goes on an on. Hence there is nothing like WINNING in Life. There is only STAYING AHEAD or BEHIND.

What this also makes us realize is that COMPARING with OTHERS is a fool’s errand.

Our goal is to be a better version of ourselves by the day and leave a legacy behind.

  • Extending James Carse’s Infinite Game concept to life and business

James Carse , the master has talked about two kinds of Games.

One is Finite where the players are fixed , rules are agreed upon , duration is fixed and there is winning or losing.

The other kind is Infinite Game where the players are not fixed , rules are not agreed upon and duration is not known.Hence in such a case there is nothing like WINNING or LOSING.

Simon Sinek in his book The Infinite Game has extended James Carse’s Infinite Game concepts very aptly to life as well as business.

The following great quote highlights ho to play the infinite game of life or business.

“There is NO such thing as “WINNING BUSINESS” or “WINNING LIFE” , there is only AHEAD and BEHIND.

Realizing this will make us better equipped to play the infinite game

  • How to “win” an infinite game

An infinite game is one where the players are not fixed , there are no clearly defined rules and no fixed timelines.Any number of players can enter or exit at any stage.

In such a scenario the two important factors are 1) will & 2) resources

An infinite player’s goal is to use the “will”(motivation , will power , inspiration etc. other human aspects) to advance the resources(would mean profit , money) in order to frustrate others who lose the will and drain out their resources & hence finally quit the game.

Thus at one time one player may be ahead and at another time the same player may be behind.Tbus an infinite player understands the fact that there is nothing like “winning” in an infinite game. The sole goal should be self advancement to keep playing.

Simon Sibek’s book titled “The Infinite Games” touches upon these aspects and extends these concepts to business and life.
