  • Why Large Problems need small solutions?

Adopted from the book titled “Switch” by Chip and Dan Heath

The rational brain of human beings rederred as the “Rider” is capable of complex analysis and problem solving

Though this is a wonderful gift , can act in negative ways at times

The inherent tendency of the rational brain is to assume that large problems need large complex solutions which is not the case.

Imagine the case of puerperal fever that broke as an epidemic during the 18th and early 19th century. The solution was very simple , cleanliness

This is indeed a lesson in itself

  • Driving away negativity from our rational mind

Adopted from the book titled “Switch” by Chip and Dan Heath

It is the inherent tendency of our very own rational brain to search for the problems instead of the solution when faced with a situation

Also this part of the brain which makesvus unique and separate from other animals gets confused when made to decide amongst a bunch of options

The two techiques that solve these problems are:

    1) Find the bright spots to help the brain focus on the solutions and positives

    2) Provide it a crystal clear direction to remove ambiguity

  • Pros & Cons of the human rational brain

Adopted from the book totled “Switch” by Chip and Dan Heath

The human rational brain has the capacity to analyze and solve problem. This is unique and makes us separate from other animals

    Pros-

    1) Visionary

    2) willing to make short term sacrifices for long term gains

    3) Is able to follow a map , perfectly

    Cons-

    1) Has limited reserves of self control beyond which it gets exhausted

2)In the face of multiple options & ambiguity undergoes “analysis paralysis” and cannot make up mind

    3) Relentless focus on problems than solutions

  • What is meant by “decision paralysis”?

Adopted from the book titled “Switch” by Chip and Dan Heath.

Our rational brain referred to as the “rider” of the “elephant” or emotional brain gives us the unique capability to analyze a situation and take decisions.

In the absence of a clear direction , give a multiple range of options this unique rational brain lacks ditection and gets confused. This phenomenon is referred to as “decision paralysis”

A crystal clear direction helps prevent this phenomenon

  • Role of “rider” & “elephant” in influencing change

The rider or the rational brain analyzes situation and provides the necessary direction to influence change.

The elephant or the emotional limbic brain understands only signals and provides the passion to influence change.

Thus for change to be driven both the “rider” and “elephant” need to be influenced with the necessary arousal to complement each other and produce the desired impact.

Adopted from the book titled “Switch” by Chip and Dan Heath.

  • Scientifically driving change , in 3 steps

Adopted from the book titled “Switch” from Chip and Dan Heath.

Three 3 steps to drive change are:

    1) Direct the Rider The rational brain referred to as the “Rider” needs to a crystal clear direction to be able to drive change

2)Motivate the elephant – Engaging the emotional limbic brain of humans that understands only signals , we encourage cooperation to drive change. This would help to get rid of mental exhaustion

    3) Shape the Path – The situational problem can be influenced by better shaping the path to make change more likely

  • The “Planner” and “Doer” parts of the human brain

Human brain has two components one the rational brain and the other limbic brain.

Whereas rational brain helps to plan for the future , the limbic or emotional brain often referred as the “elephant” is responsible for emotions.

Thus the rational or analytical part of the brain is often referred to the “Planner” whereas the emotional brain is known as the “Doer”.If emotional brain is the elephant the rational brain is the “rider”.

Thus human behavior is an interplay of these two components.

Chip and Dan Heath mention this in the book titled “Switch”.

  • What is unique about “Clocky” the alarm clock?

Gauri Nanda from MIT had designed a unique alarm clock with wheels named “Clocky”.

This clock was meant to start moving across the room using the wheels instead of giving the provision to “snooze”.

As a result of this the clock gave no chance to the user to neglect the alarm.

What a great invention to tame the “elephant” limbic brain.

“Switch” by Chip and Dan Heath makes a mention of this.
