  • Prioritize Building Systems over Setting Goals. Why?

Very frequently we obsess with setting goals thinking that life is a race wherein ONLY WINNING matters. Moment you realize that life is an infinite game wherein continuous improvement is paramount, you would prioritize building systems over setting goals.

This wonderful insight of James Clear from Atomic Habits, justifies the above argument and encourage us to play the infinite game more efficiently.

“The purpose of setting goals is to win the game. The purpose of building systems is to continue playing the game. True long-term thinking is goal-less thinking. It’s not about any single accomplishment. It is about the cycle of endless refinement and continuous improvement. Ultimately, it is your commitment to the process that will determine your progress.”

    Atomic Habits – James Clear

  • Why is SELLING innately HUMAN?

The insight has been adopted from the following great leadership quote of Simon Sinek..

“We don’t do business with companies. We do business with people. Business is always human.”

    Simon Sinek

Come let us pile on motivation..

  • The MERITS of an INFINITE APPROACH..

The following self help, motivational and inspirational insight has been adopted from Simon Sinek’s lessons around Infinite Game wherein he has clearly called out the merits of an INFINITE APPROACH as follows –

By taking an infinite approach, and reframing your competitors as worthy rivals, the success of your peers becomes fuel for your own growth as opposed to the source of your insecurity.

Adopted from Simon Sinek’s great leadership quotes

Thus in the INFINITE GAME of Life taking an infinite approach is the way forward.

  • As a LEADER are you looking for a MASTERCLASS on INFINITE MINDEDNESS?CVS Caremark is your point of reference..

Adopted from the following great insight shared by Simon Sinek from his book The Infinite Game

CVS Caremark in Feb 2014 , declared that it would stop selling cigarettes in all its stores. This was in line with the broader health care commitment it had embarked on.

For many Wall street pundits this seemed a suicidal move  that would cost it revenues to the tune of billions of dollars.

But what transpired was magical. All those who predicted that cigarette sales from CVS would shift to other local stores were taken by surprise.

The move by the infinite minded player CVS had a lasting impact on the population who started reducing cigarette consumption and hence instead of shift in revenue due to sale of cigarettes the cigarette consumption itself drastically reduced.

After a initial setback due to fall in share prices , as a result of this move , the share prices of CVS recovered since this was taken in a very positive manner by the employees and population in general.

In line with its infinite minded vision CVS Caremark changed its named to CVS Health in Sep 2014.

This proves beyond doubt that an infinite minded vision is always for the long run and the risk taken proves its worth in the long run.

  • Infinite minded players follow the these three principles religiously

As mentioned by Jim Collins in his book Good To Great , the following are three key concepts that are part of Hedgehog Concept so religiously followed by infinite minded companies in the modern age infinite game to stay ahead of peers.

    1. What are you DEEPLY PASSIONATE about?
    2. WHAT you CAN be BEST in the WORLD at?
    3. What drives your ECONOMIC ENGINE?

The intersection point of these three concepts is where these organizations focus on to stay ahead of the competition with full focus.

Concepts adopted from Jim Collins’s book Good to Great and Simon Sinek’s book The Infinite Game

  • This piece of advice will inspire us to adopt an “Infinite Mindset”

Adopted from Simon Sinek’s great sayings and advises all of us to adopt an infinite mindset for a better future in the infinite game of life

“Now more than ever we need to embrace an INFINITE MINDSET.

The FINITE MINDSET of opportunism , selfishness and panic will hurt all of us in the long run.

Let us embrace GENEROSITY , SELFLESSNESS and CALM CAUTION as we navigate this together.”

  • This is a very harmful byproduct of Motivation 2.0

Motivation 2.0 , a term coined by Daniel Pink in his book Drive , based on Carrot and Stick motivational technique has had its origin right from the age of Industrial revolution and worked wonders.

The rationale behind this model was : “Reward good behavior and compliance to produce more of the same.Punish undesirable behavior and non-compliance to ensure compliance.”

This risk-reward kind of a mindset has very harmful side effects.People in the mad rush of being compliant become short term oriented , have a narrow focus and start concealing facts to indulge in unethical behavior.

“Ethical Fading” is a term coined by Simon Sinek in his book Infinite Game to mention the unethical short sighted behavior that individuals resort to in order to meet short term performance targets. This is the situation that results when people are pitted against each other.

Thus the need of a new motivational model in the modern day of the knowledge worker

  • Approaching the Infinite Game with an open mind

The following quote from Simon Sinek on Infinite game explains why an open mind is needed to play an infinite game.

“Whereas a FINITE minded player fears things that are NEW or DISRUPTIVE , the INFINITE minded player revels in them.”

  • We humans are born to be “players” and NOT “pawns”

Right from the caveman times we are born to be autonomous individuals , not individual automatons.

Our brains are wired to be intrinsically motivated and hence we are inherently “Type I ” individuals.

Outside forces including the very idea that we need to be managed have conspired from time to time to change our default setting and turn us into “extrinsically motivated” Type X individuals.

To return us from Type X to Type I where we are out our autonomous best just needs infinite minded leadership and creation of a conducive environment built on trust.

Adopted from Daniel Pink’ book Drive and Simon Sinek’s book The Infinite Game
