Avoid Addiction to Social Media. Why?

    Bloganuary writing prompt
In what ways do you communicate online?

Whenever I am communicating online I ensure the most OPTIMUM use of communication tools including SOCIAL MEDIA. All of this to avoid being addicted to social media.

There has been elaborate research which illustrates that constant exposure to social media, online tools and related addiction is similar to alcoholism and addiction to drugs.

Instant gratification that comes as a result of these online tools, makes us restless and especially for Gen X millennials is leading to anxiety, depression and suicide.

Though social media and other online tools carry a lot of benefits, their usage must be optimal.

  • Why is SOCIAL MEDIA a deterrent to DEEP WORK?

Why is SOCIAL MEDIA a deterrent to DEEP WORK?

    Daily writing prompt
What could you do less of?

If I could have done something better over the last year, it would be deep work. In this blogpost I will enlighten you how social media is a deterrent to deep work.

Cal Newport mentions at length about the importance of deep work in his iconic book.

This book does have a lot of relevance in the modern day economy wherein doing a work of art via deep work indeed matters.

Social media and other networking tools cause a lot of distraction and hence act as a major deterrent to doing deep work.

Hence my advise is to use social media as well as other networking tools a little judiciously in order to save you time to perform deep work.

    Stay away from distractions
  • Understanding the fine balance between “human bonds” and “technological advancement”

As technology continues to advance the human race , as social media and various other gadgets take charge of our lives it is important to not lose sight of the fact that human beings still crave for social bonds. This is the biggest difference between us and animals around us , our ability to form human bonds and societies that help us flourish and remain fulfilled.

In the age of social media(FB , Instagram , Twitter) and instant gratification thanks to Amazon , Flipkart etc. we as human beings are mostly losing human touch and sacrificing the same for virtual bonds e.g. FB friend lists etc.

Right from the caveman times it is social bonds that has helped us fight all odds and helped us survive when other animal species around us have by now become extinct.

Social bonds play important role in creation of communities , countries and for that matter companies where we work day and night to earn our daily bread.Though technology has acted as a huge enabler in recent times , it is important not to sacrifice human bonds at the cost of short term happiness provided by technology e.g. social media. We need to strike a golden balance.

Our brains are oriented to feel charged up and fulfilled through human bonds by feel and touch rather than short term happiness via instant gratification and social media virtual bonds. If we remember DUNBAR number , at one time it is not possible for an human being to maintain contacts with more than 150 individuals but the presence of social media e.g. FB , Twitter we as individuals are driven to proliferate our friend list beyond manageable proportions just for that shot of dopamine.

The touch of oxytocin flow that we get through genuine human bonds and social relationships make us feel safe and fulfilled. This is pure science of the brain which will remain the same. Our brains are oriented to feel charged up and fulfilled through human bonds by feel and touch rather thame irrespective of the advancement of technology. This has existed right from the caveman times and is the single biggest reason why human beings are different from animals or ROBOTs.

We as individuals  should take an oath to regularly practice socializing with those around us who believe in what we believe through a sense of feel and touch rather than short lived happiness via the social media. This would enliven us and make our lives more fulfilling.

    Pile on motivation!!

  • Side effects of “instant gratification”

Adopted from Simon Sinek’s book titled “Together is Better”.

Modern day instant gratification seems very luring for a Gen X millennial.

In the past ordering a gift and physically receiving it used to take time.Nowadays order something from Amazon and you immediately receive the product.

For watching a blockbuster movie one had to wait for a long while.Nowadays Netflix , youtube.com enable instant gratification.

Even for that matter making friends is so easy courtesy social media e.g. Facebook.

Though instant gratification is something the human race is proud about , this has given rise to a bunch of side effects which are indeed very harmful.

Not getting something instantly can lead to depression , anger and hence the number of suicidal cases , mental ill health cases are on the rise for a modern day millennial.

Though often overlooked , is a serious topic to reflect on.

  • How is “social media addiction” similar to “alcoholism”

The human brain is very complex.

There are several important neuro transmitters associated with ebb and flow of various emotions.

Modern day social media addiction is reaching enormous proportions.More than ever before we are having cases of depression , unhappiness and suicidal cases.

There is a neurotransmitter named “dopamine” associated with sudden flow of positive “quick fix” emotions.

The “likes” , “good comments” , pseudo status of having large number of connections get us more and more addicted to social media and results in the flow of the addictive beuro transmitter named “dopamine”.This kind of addiction is very similar to the excitement felt by alcoholics , drug addicts on consumption of these addictive narcotic substances.

Tbe flipside is that in the absence of lines , connections on social media we feel left out and highly depressed resulting in the flow of the stress chemical named “cortisol“.This leads to depression , suicidal cases.

Thus its high time we limit this abuse of social media to lead healthy and fulfilling lives.
