  • Say Bye to Social Media

    Say Bye to Social Media

    Daily writing prompt
Do you need a break? From what?

If I were to take a break, I would say bye to social media.

In the hypermediated world dominated by social media and digital gadgets I strongly feel that we are surrendering our autonomy.

Being addicted to digital gadgets waiting for that one like or comment has slowly taken control of our lives without our notice.

As mentioned by Cal Newport in Digital Minimalism its high time we realized this and use digital gadgets and social media judiciously.

  • Best Advice to Millennials

    Best Advice to Millennials

The best piece of advice to Millennials and Gen Z

The best piece of advice I have ever heard and would like to pass on to Millennials is mentioned below.

My teenage was much different from that of modern day millennials. There are these two things which are driving modern day millennials crazy:

    1. Instant gratification – Through channels such as Amazon wherein you instantly get what you want. The absence of instant gratification leads to feeling of anxiety and stress. PATIENCE is the KEY.
    2. Addiction to social media – The fear of missing out forces these millennials to seek a dopamine shot through Likes and Shares on social media platforms. JUDICIOUS use of SOCIAL MEDIA is the KEY.

Unfulfilled needs due to 1 and 2 lead to feeling of anxiety, depression and even suicidal cases in modern day millennials.

Nothing highlights this better than the following Simon Sinek quote:

In what ways do you communicate online?

Whenever I am communicating online I ensure the most OPTIMUM use of communication tools including SOCIAL MEDIA. All of this to avoid being addicted to social media.

There has been elaborate research which illustrates that constant exposure to social media, online tools and related addiction is similar to alcoholism and addiction to drugs.

Instant gratification that comes as a result of these online tools, makes us restless and especially for Gen X millennials is leading to anxiety, depression and suicide.

  • Social Media Addiction versus Alcoholism

    Social Media Addiction versus Alcoholism

If there is one thing I could stay away from more often, it would be social media. When we compare social media addiction versus alcoholism we find lot of similarities.

Social media addiction makes us restless with a constant surge of dopamine flow.

The feeling is very similar to being addicted to cocaine or alcohol and has very harmful effects.

Hence we should make use of our social media time and attention with thorough caution.

The below post has more details.

  • Social media addiction and alcoholism

Social media abuse is increasing by the day.

Getting addicted to social media is very common in the age of high speed internet and smart phones

Like alcoholism , social media craving is addictive and both release the addictive chemical named “dopamine” that causes short term happiness.

As a result of this , addicts crave for instant gratification , in the absence of which depression results

  • The power of human bonds

Adopted from Simon Sinek’s book titled “Together is Better”

Social media and its proliferation has made life convenient and made virtual connections a reality

In spite of this , social media or for that matter video calls can never be a substitute for “face to face” communication.

This is because all human beings are social animals and crave for social connections and bonds to feel safe.Nothing can be a substitute for this.
