  • The DNA of a “intrinsically motivated” approach

The key ingredients of a Type I driven intrinsically motivated approach to stimulate creativity and innovation in the modern day of the knowledge worker are as follows:

    1. Create an environment that makes people feel good about participating
    2. Give users requisite autonomy
    3. Keep the system as open as possible

Adopted from Daniel Pink’s book Drive

  • Why Type I behavior promotes greater physical and mental well being?

Type I behavior or Intrinsically motivated behavior is about long term Oxytocin driven fulfillment.

People who are intrinsically motivated think beyond short term addictive rewards , beyond the addictive shot of DOPAMINE to think about long term benefits to derive fulfillment.

Hence as opposed to extrinsic motivation , Type I behavior based on intrinsic motivation is about long term and hence relates to greater physical and mental well being as against depression and anxiety so common when motivation is due to extrinsic rewards

  • The Infinite game needs more “Type I” players

Simon Sinek’s book The Infinite Game talks about business and life as both Infinite Games where the rules are not defined , the players are unknown and the time is unlimited.

In both business as well as life , there is nothing like “Winning” or “Losing”.There is only “Ahead” or “Behind”.

Needlessly to say players in an infinite game need to think of the long term and need to possess an infinite mindset.

Daniel Pink in his book Drive categorizes such people who are intrinsically motivated towards a JUST CAUSE as “Type I” or intrinsically motivated personalities.Being intrinsically motivated makes these people use autonomy and mastery to work towards a vision or a JUST CAUSE rather than working for money i.e. short term winning.

Hence the infinite game of life needs adoption of a mindset similar to that of “Type I” personalities.

  • “Type I” personalities the need of the hour

Type I personalities who are intrinsically motivated for achieving something larger than themselves are needed now more than ever before.

The following points list out why they outperform the extrinsically motivated and reward driven Type X personalities:

    1. Modern day right brain oriented work need people to be intrinsically motivated to arrive at results.Left brain oriented work can be stimulated by rewards not right brain oriented work
    2. Type I personalities always think about the long term whereas Type X personalities are selfish and are concerned with only short term benefits
    3. Type I behavior is a renewable resource and these are people with an abundant mentality who live to spread motivation as a disease keeping the long term perspective in mind
    4. Type I behavior is for the long term without paying too much heed to short term gain and failure and hence promotes greater physical and mental well being.

  • Knowing the differences between “Type I” and “Type X” personalities

Adopted from Daniel Pink’s book Drive.

EXtrinsic Motivation is considered the primary driver behind the Carrot and Stick method of motivating people.Reward for doing routine bound work effectively and Punishment for NOT being able to do the same , brings in compliance and is perfect for a factory model kind of work environment.

Hence Type X  people are short term oriented and are driven by eXtrinsic rewards in order to get work done. The moment the rewards disappear , the purpose is lost.

As against this the modern day age of infinite game needs more Type I people who are Intrinsically motivated for doing social good without worrying about rewards and other short term gains.

Being intrinsically driven make someone realize benefits for the long term , society in general without having to focus on short term oriented microscopic aspects.

Thus having more Type I personality oriented people is the need of the hour.

  • Have you ever heard about “Type X” and “Type I” personalities?

Dan Pink in his book “Drive” makes a mention about these two types of personalities.

Type X – People who are driven by eXtrinsic motivation e.g. “if-then” rewards to get their job done.

Type I – People who are Intrinsically motivated by a non-monetary overarching purpose to make a difference in their daily lives.

In the modern conceptual age , we should all strive to move towards a Type I personality to attain fulfillment.
