  • Organizations susceptible to “Ethical fading”

Leaders with a finite mindset put numbers and profits over people.

In an organization or culture where people are pitted against each other , in order to meet performance targets even the most talented of people can indulge in unethical practices to meet targets.

Thus such kind of organizations which are run with a finite mindset and numbers are put ahead of people there is more chance of ethical fading than organizations led with an infinite mindset where people are put ahead of resources.

Adopted from Simon Sinek’s book titled The Infinite Game.

  • Why is it natural to put numbers before people?

For finite minded leaders the natural instinct is to put profits and numbers before people.

This is because resources or profits fuel an organization’s growth and are tangible. There are various short cuts that can be adopted to report an improvement in profits and hence these short cuts are adopted by most leaders.Resource is tangible and related to financial metrics associated with an organization.

True infinite minded visionary leaders take the difficult path of putting people over resources.Putting people over resources entails investing in the intangible asset of “will” which cannot be manipulated by money.Motivating people to get the best out of them by creating a good environment goes a long way in inspiring the “will” of people to in turn take care of resources.

Thus being an infinite minded leader needs risk as well as a lot of hard work.

  • Reasons behind reduction in “average life ” of a modern day company”?

Adopted from Simon Sinek’s book titled “The Infinite Game”

According to a 2017 study by Credit Suisse the average life of a company has reduced from ~60 years in the 1950’s to ~20 years in the modern day.

Though disruptive technology proliferation is often provided as an excuse for this we need to delve deep and understand that disruption is nothing new.

Think of micro-oven , television , transistor , credit card etc. these were all invented around the 1950’s.

The reason reason is increasing finite mindedness in modern day leaders. These are leaders who are willingness to sacrifice people to meet their numbers for their beloved shareholders.Since the people are pitted against each other these leaders end up creating an environment filled with micro-management where people lack a feeling of trustworthiness.

Hence the need of the hour is to train modern day leaders to possess an infinite mindset with a long term goal in mind.
