  • Knowing our WHY can help us define our JUST CAUSE

Adopted from Simon Sinek’s book titled “The Infinite Game”

WHY as coined by Simon in his book “Start With Why” is something that defines us in terms of our values and beliefs.A WHY is formed by connecting the dots from the past.

A JUST CAUSE on the other hand is a vision for the future that is bigger than ourselves.

Think of WHY as a the foundation of our house and JUST CAUSE as the futuristic model of the house.

Thus knowing our WHY can help us better in defining a JUST CAUSE.

  • Reason our “WHY” should be for service to others

The concept of WHY was introduced by Simon Sinek in his iconic book titled “Start With Why”.

A WHY is another name for finding a deep filled purpose in our lives. This has to be in sync with our own personality traits as well.

When we run after short term benefits , hit a goal , get a promotion we do find moments of happiness which is short lived. This is like a “dopamine hit” which is bound to die after some time.

Hence our sense of purpose has to be long term. When we delve deep and find our purpose or WHY , more often it is part of a futuristic vision which is bigger than ourselves.

When we work towards attainment of the WHY , we sense the flow of “oxytocin” or the fulfillment chemical that enriches us.

  • Are you living your WHY?

Simon Sinek pioneered the concept of WHY as one which gives us purpose and meaning in our lives. We should each strive towards finding out our real purpose or “WHY” in our lives for a fulfilling life.

When we say and do the things what we truly believe our behavior is regarded as consistent. This is when people start believing in us and are loyal to us.This is true integrity that we exhibit.

This is when we are truly living our WHY.

  • Understanding Simon Sinek’s individual WHY

Simon Sinek is the author of best selling books like “Start With Why” , “Find Your Why” , “Leaders Eat Last” , “Together is Better” , “The Infinite Game”.

He has illuminated the world on the concept of ‘WHY” to give purpose in our lives.

Let us have a look at the WHY of Simon Sinek and break it into its components. His WHY reads as follows:

To __________________________inspire people to do things that inspire them

so that ___________________________________ together , we can change our world

The first part of the statement following TO relates to the contribution & the part following SO THAT relates to the impact.

This is how a WHY statement should be structured to derive meaning and purpose in our lives.

  • “Organization as Tree , employees as birds” metaphor

Every organization is like a TREE with BRANCHES(divisions) with each BRANCH having a bird’s(employee) NEST(safe home).

Each bird sitting in a nest i.e. each employee has an individual WHY oriented towards feeling safe.

This individual WHY has to roll up into the division’s WHY which should eventually roll up into the organization’s WHY.

Understanding the WHY or purpose at each level helps to run a organization in a better manner.

  • What is a “Why Statement”?

Knowing our individual WHY is key to finding meaning and purpose in our lives.

Simon Sinek , who has introduced the concept of “WHY” has provided a format of this WHY statement. After lot of soul searching and choosing the right partners , WHY discovery is possible.

The WHY statement comprises of the “contribution” to create the desired “impact” in our lives. It must be said this gels with our brain’s natural inclination to find a meaning or sense of purpose.

The structure of the WHY statement is:

    To __CONTRIBUTION______________________________________________ so that _IMPACT_____________________________________

  • Characteristics of the partner who can help in “Why Discovery”

A Why Discovery is related to finding WHY of an individual to give a sense of purpose in life.

For undergoing a WHY discovery Simon Sinek in his book titled “Find Your Why” recommends the partner to have great listening skills.

The best partners should be ones who are very curious and have great listening skills.Unexpected thought provoking questions , asking right follow up questions is quintessential to help in WHY discovery of individuals hence partners should have these requisite skills.

  • Importance of organizational”macro” & “micro” aspects in WHY discovery

Any organization has a WHY(macro level) , each of its divisions have their individual WHY’s(macro level) and every individual in those divisions have their individual WHY’s (micro level)as well.

Understanding WHY discovery at both the macro as well as the micro level is important to make sure the right people are working in the right places in the organization.

  • Why Our “vision” should be said out loud?

“Your vision is only actionable if you say it loud.If you keep it to yourself . it will remain a figment of your imagination.” – Simon Sinek

Adopted from Simon Sinek’s book titled “Find Your Why”

  • The journey of WHY Discovery for individuals – Lessons learnt from “Find Your Why”

Find Your Why from Simon Sinek , David Mead and Peter Docker is the follow up book to Start With Why by Simon Sinek.

The Why Discovery for individuals is something I found simply fascinating.

The distance the authors have gone in explaining the scientific approach to discovering WHY is simply awesome.

An individual who needs to discovery his/her WHY needs to first find a friend or a trustworthy person who would help with the discovery.Such a person should be chosen very judiciously. The person needs to be a very good listener and should not have prejudiced views.Eagerness and inquisitiveness in helping a friend discover WHY is also a very important criteria.

After the facilitator is chosen the following are the three steps:

    1. Gather stories about the life of the person – These stories should have some special place in the life of the person.
    2. Find out patterns – From the facts noted from the stories , try to find out meaning and connect the dots.
    3. Draft a WHY – Based on the above analysis , try to draft a WHY in the following format:

             TO___________________(contribution) SO THAT_____________________(impact)

The draft WHY is in no means going to be 100% perfect at the first attempt and this needs to be refined going forward. All this exercise would do is to set a foundation for creation of a WHY.

For more details I would sincerely encourage readers to go through the book FIND YOU WHY.Believe me it would an absolutely unbelievable experience.
